We are featuring Rebecca Balough, a Penn State 2020 graduate, for our second Artist Statement video on our YouTube Channel! Artist Statement videos are a new video series from Penn State’s creative arts magazines Klio & Kalliope, which lends our community of artists and writers a platform to showcase themselves and their work.

Balough graduated with a B.A. in Film/Video and a minor in English. Much of her writing has been featured in past editions of Kalliope and Folio.

This piece is produced by our film editor and Kalliope liaison, Morgan Seiff, and directed and edited by Balough herself. Watch the video to learn more about the behind the scenes of Balough’s storytelling process, as well as what inspires her films and writing.

Along with her Artist Statement video, our YouTube Channel is also going to be featuring two of Balough’s films. Stayed tuned tomorrow for more information on the films and Balough’s thought process when creating them!

Rebecca Balough is a director and screenwriter based in New York City. Both her work as a director and writer use whimsical and experimental tones to bring to life the small stories living among us. Her most recent work can be seen in the narrative short film “Postcards from Portland” or the animated experimental “Filling the Void,” both currently in their festival runs. When she isn’t behind the camera or bending over the page, Rebecca loves strolling till she finds a new coffee spot on the weekends, collecting house plants, and finding any excuse to end up at Home Depot.
