THE PRINCESS BRIDE

Told through the frame of a grandfather’s story to his sick grandson, The Princess Bride (1987) is a masterpiece of comedy and adventure, following a girl named Buttercup as she chats with and eventually falls for a farmhand named Westley. What comes after is a surprising number of twists and turns, a wide cast of heartfelt characters, and an irresistibly interesting drama. The locations filmed on all have the charm of practical effects and natural landscapes, and every actor does a fantastic job playing their role with the greatest enthusiasm. It’s a story I’ll always love to be told, just one more time.

THE IRON GIANT

We open as an unidentified object crashes off the shore of Maine. The object then emerges from the ocean and enters the forest nearby the town of Rockwell. Hogarth Hughes, a young boy living in the town, heads out the following night in an attempt to investigate the crash. Based loosely on the 1968 novel, The Iron Man by Ted Hughes, we follow the story of Hogarth, and the giant in a fantastically done combination of 2D and 3D animation that gives the entire movie it’s signature appearance. The film manages to combine amazing visual work with characters you cannot help but sympathise with as they struggle through life with the cold war and their own personal issues looming. Given the opportinuty and craft, The Iron Giant is a childhood classic that is just, super.

THE LAND BEFORE TIME

With it’s beautiful watercolor landscapes, charming characters and a beautiful score. The 1988 movie was so beloved it spun off an entire franchise of direct to video sequels and additional content, but regardless of how good those were this film still stands out. The touching story about family, friendship, and loss is something that fans can remember fondly to this day. It’s performances may come off as cheesy at first on a rewatch, but the characters have a way of growing on you, even as an adult viewer. For an adventure 65 million years in the past, I still love thinking back on its emotional story.
